Refraction Through a Glass Block | GCSE Physics

A set of GCSE Physics diagrams illustrating the refraction of light through a rectangular glass block, including the incident ray, refracted ray, emergent ray, normal, and angles of incidence, refraction and emergence.

GCSE Physics ray diagram showing refraction through a rectangular glass block, with the incident, refracted and emergent rays, normals, angles of incidence, refraction and emergence, and the relationship i = e

These diagrams show how light changes direction as it enters and leaves a glass block, with the emergent ray parallel to the incident ray but laterally displaced. Transparent-background downloads make the diagrams easy to incorporate into presentations, worksheets and other teaching materials.

Flexible for teaching and assessment

Four versions included

  • Labelled | colour

  • Labelled | printable

  • Recall | colour

  • Recall | printable

The labelled versions can be used to introduce and explain the features of refraction through a glass block. The recall versions replace the labels with blank boxes, allowing students to practise identifying the rays, normal and angles.

The high-contrast greyscale versions are designed specifically for printing and photocopying, while the colour versions work well for presentations, digital resources and classroom displays.
