Stoma and Guard Cells Diagrams | GCSE Biology

A new set of GCSE Biology diagrams showing a stoma and its surrounding turgid guard cells, compared with flaccid, closed guard cells. Designed to help students understand how plants control gas exchange and water loss through the stomata in their leaves.

The diagrams show the structure of a stoma created by the surrounding turgid guard cells accompanied by a closed pair of flaccid guard cells, providing a clear visual representation of the structures involved in gas exchange and the regulation of water loss from a leaf.

The labelled versions can be used when introducing stomata and guard cells and explaining their role in plant gas exchange. The gap-fill versions provide a simple way for students to practise recalling key terminology.

The diagrams can also support teaching about the balance between carbon dioxide uptake for photosynthesis and water loss through transpiration.

The greyscale versions are suitable for printed worksheets, while the colour versions can be used for presentations and digital resources.
